What is a dynamic dog assessment?

A Dynamic Dog Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to identify potential pain or discomfort in dogs, which might be contributing to behavioral issues. This type of assessment goes beyond typical behaviour consultations by examining various aspects of a dog's life, including their posture, gait, and daily activities alongside their behaviour.

Why is this part of a behavioural consultation?

I am supporting an increasing number of dogs who's behaviour is exacerbated or caused by an undiagnosed, underlying medical issue. This can seriously hamper any behavioural modification plans. To make permanent change to undesired behavioural issues it is vital to address the root of the cause of the issue, not just the symptoms.  A Dynamic Dog Assessment alongside my experience will enable us to work together to facilitate permanent change with confidence.

Research shows that 80% of behavioural cases are influenced by underlying medical issues or discomfort.  Many dogs tense up when examined in a veterinary clinic making it difficult to identify underlying discomfort in such a short consultation. It may be that your dog has always had an issue but the signs are subtle and gone unnoticed or the issues you are having are unpredictable without a pattern. The Dynamic Dog Assessment uses a hands off, and indepth approach to assess all elements that influence your dog and create a comprehensive report with evidence to share with other professionals who are working with you and your dog to enable the appropriate support and treatment to be given.  By including the Dynamic Dog Assessment as part of my consultations it ensures I am giving you the best support and advice to help you and your dogs go on to enjoy your lives together.

I have written a blog on the links between pain and behaviour here: Can chronic pain really cause behavioural issues?

What does an assessment include?

Here's a breakdown of what a Dynamic Dog Assessment typically involves:

  1. Initial 90 minute Consultation: A detailed interview with the dog owner to understand your  dog's daily routine, behaviours, and any concerns.

  2. Evidence Gathering: Collection of videos and photos of the dog performing everyday activities to analyze their movement and posture.

  3. Analysis: Reviewing the gathered evidence to identify any physical issues that might be causing or exacerbating behavioural problems.

  4. Veterinary Report: Compiling a comprehensive report for the vet, including video and photographic evidence, to aid in diagnosing and treating any underlying health issues.

  5. Behaviour Management Plan: Providing a tailored "first aid" plan to manage the dog's behavior while addressing any identified physical discomfort.  After this you can add on behavioural follow ups as and when needed.

This holistic approach ensures that both physical and behavioral aspects are considered, leading to more effective treatment and support for your dog.

I am already working with a trainer and/or behaviourist?

That's great, I am happy to work with other training or behavioural professionals.  I can offer a Dynamic Dog Assessment as a standalone package if you are working with another professional who is willing to continue working with you to provide behavioural support.  I will liase with them after I have completed the report and pass on any interim behavioural recommendations.   Please pop me a message to discuss your options.
